Eligibility for Admission

Central to work and training at Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association (BA) are the requirements specified by Mary Baker Eddy in the Church Manual By-law “Christian Science Nurse” (Art. VIII, Sect. 31) and the qualities Mrs. Eddy describes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, 395:17-20. To the degree that an individual faithfully follows the guidance Mrs. Eddy gives in responding to his or her neighbor’s need, he or she is practicing Christian Science nursing. Having “a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice” is a prerequisite for taking the Christian Science Nursing Arts training (see Church Manual, Art. VIII, Sect. 31).

The CSNA application gives individuals an opportunity to describe their present practice of Christian Science, Christian Science nursing, and qualifications for continuing to broaden and strengthen their practice at the BA. Through the application review process, the Christian Science Nursing Arts Training School determines whether or not an application can be accepted and/or which course level is most appropriate for an applicant. If a Christian Science nurse is seeking to re-enter a training program, the appropriate course will be determined on an individual basis.

In reviewing applications for courses, we give consideration to the specific avenue chosen for the mentored portion of the course required in each course. To locate an on-the-job training program with mentored instruction that is in conjunction with Christian Science Nursing Arts training, please contact the Director of Christian Science Nurses Training at the BA.

Note: The ability to read, write, and speak English comprehensively is necessary for participation in the CSNA classes and for completing the CSNA courses, which are presently taught in English. The art of reading aloud from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and the Christian Science periodicals is necessary to the ministry of Christian Science nursing. Support and necessary classes or tutoring that is needed in these areas for the individual Christian Science nurse will also be the responsibility of the individual Christian Science nursing organization or service where the Christian Science nurse is taking the mentored portion of the courses.
