In September I attended the yearly conference of the ORH (Organization of Residential Homes), which was held in San Francisco at Arden Wood.
If you are not familiar with this organization, ORH has been helping Christian Scientists find residential homes since 1973. The 19 member-organizations are located primarily in the US, with the exception of McNeil House in the UK.
I especially enjoy the ORH conferences and meeting with the members because of the rich diversity among the organizations and their homes and facilities. These range from large to small. In the US, members are primarily from the East and West Coasts, although there are homes in Texas, Missouri, Kansas and Ohio. In some instances the homes are embedded within a larger community, enabling the Christian Science group to take advantage of the many amenities of a larger facility.
Adding to the diversity are more specialized homes represented by Asher Student Foundation, Twelveacres, and Rainbow Valley Resource Network.
If you are searching for a residence with other Christian Scientists, there is a handy tool on the ORH website that allows you to locate homes by location as well as amenities. You can search for homes based on a variety of criteria, such as: activities, meals, laundry, benevolence, pets, housekeeping, transportation, and Christian Science nursing. For those of you who are looking for completely independent living, the listing includes facilities in that category as well.
In 2013, when the ORH conference was held in Boston at the Benevolent Association, we interviewed Daystar Northwest Foundation, which supports the Christian Science community at Daystar Retirement Village in Seattle. Click here to listen to that interview.
