Stewardship of the Refuge

Turning off from the busyness of Route 9 and its surrounding activities and onto the BA campus, you quickly begin to forget that you’re just a couple of miles away from the city of Boston. As you travel up the driveway under the canopy of trees, surrounded by the beautiful architecture and landscaping, you’re welcomed into the stillness, serenity, and tranquility of the BA’s 24.2-acre campus and its refuge.

Great love and care go into the daily stewardship of this quiet refuge for healing, prayer, and spiritual growth. Devoted attention is given to every activity of the Benevolent Association to ensure that they support and promote an atmosphere reflective of divine Truth and Love. This care extends throughout the campus.

Those who have had the opportunity to visit the BA’s campus and explore the woodland areas and trails, have no doubt felt the beauty and peace they bring to the healing atmosphere here. We are tremendously grateful for our facilities staff, their expertise, and the partnerships they’ve built over the years with trusted tradespeople. Together, they play a quiet yet pivotal role in ensuring that all the infrastructure, systems, and landscaping that support our mission are rightly cared for and safe.

With support from our local arborist, we recently underwent our annual campus-wide review to care for a number of trees on our property ensuring they continue to flourish. During a recent consultation with a leading landscape architect, he and his team were in awe when they first toured the BA’s campus. They felt the mature landscaping along with the variety and intentional placement of certain trees evoked a feeling of being in an arboretum.

We frequently receive gratitude for the atmosphere at the BA, including these comments from a recent Rest & Study guest:

“I wanted to let you know how moved I was by the tangible sense of peace and refuge I felt at the BA during my Association day this month. Having been inspired by the morning address, I decided to take a walk outside at our noon break to give quiet thought to what I had heard. The beautiful blooming grounds and sense of quiet sanctuary were lovely and peaceful as I sat on a bench for a while. Thank you for all you’re doing to preserve this precious sanctuary and refuge for the practice of Christian Science nursing and healing.”

We are deeply grateful to donors for their instrumental role in enabling needed progress and improvements throughout the campus and for the difference this is making in maintaining the refuge.

Looking more closely at the Original Building, we are grateful for a loving gift that recently enabled us to replace the failing flat roofing that was leaking into the entranceway of the Dining Room. Luis, a talented member of our facilities team, is restoring the entranceway with fresh drywall and paint.

These are just a few of the many ongoing projects that are needed to support the seamless continuity of this refuge. We’re so grateful for your support!
